Amending the constitution should not be done without careful consideration. There are times in which it makes sense, and there are times that it does not.
This year, we face a decision on four constitutional amendments– Issues 1, 2, 3 and 6.
Issue 1 would provide for earlier filing deadlines for statewide ballot issues. This would improve the process of our democracy and I urge a Yes vote on Issue 1.
Issue 2 would be a renewal of the Clean Ohio program that would continue investments in the cleanup of our Brownfields, and the preservation of Greenspaces throughout our state. I urge a Yes vote on Issue 2.
Issue 3 would preserve your private property rights on the ground water on your property. While most agree these rights presently exist, this is a security blanket on your rights in light of the recently passed Great Lakes Compact that was designed to protect the water in the lakes and basin from being diverted away from Ohio. I urge a Yes vote on Issue 3.
Issues 1, 2, and 3 were placed on the ballot by a vote of the Ohio Legislature.
Issue 6, however, is a different story. Issue 6 would authorize a casino monopoly for an out-of-state casino operator. It would severely limit state and/or local control and could result in none or very little taxes or profits remaining in Ohio. This is one example of an irresponsible way to amend the constitution and I urge a NO vote on Issue 6.
In short, I urge a Yes vote on 1, 2 and 3 and NO on issue 6.
